AI disclosure does not replace ownership

Declaring the use of artificial intelligence does not, by itself, determine who owns the rights to a work.

Information submitted to UMW does not constitute a legal determination of copyright, authorship, ownership or entitlement.

The person or entity delivering the release remains responsible for ensuring that it owns, controls or has obtained all rights, permissions, licenses and authorizations required for distribution.

Identity Protection

Voice cloning and identity protection

UMW pays particular attention to the use of artificial intelligence involving identity and voice.

Synthetic, cloned or transformed voices must not be used in a misleading manner that causes listeners to believe a real person participated in a recording when they did not.

When a voice can reasonably be associated with an identifiable person, UMW may request evidence of consent, authorization, licensing or other applicable rights before approving distribution.

The technical availability of an artificial intelligence tool does not, by itself, constitute authorization to use another person's identity, voice, image or other protected rights.

Users must provide accurate, complete and non-misleading information about their releases.

Rights

Technology does not eliminate obligations related to intellectual property, image, voice, identity, copyright or other applicable rights.

Accountability

The user delivering the content remains responsible for the release and the information provided to UMW.

Human attribution

Human participants should receive the appropriate credits whenever applicable.

Platform compliance

UMW may adapt its procedures when stores, DSPs, digital platforms or authorities establish new applicable requirements.

How it works

A structured framework for human, AI-assisted and synthetic music releases.

1. Create your release

Enter your release information normally within UMW Core.

2. Add human contributors

Add artists, composers, lyricists, producers, performers, and other relevant collaborators.

3. Complete the AI Disclosure

Indicate whether artificial intelligence or synthetic technology was used in any of the elements of the launch.

4. Identify the affected component

Select where the intervention took place: audio, voice, composition, lyrics, instrumental, artwork, video, promotional material.

5. Confirm rights

The owner must confirm that they own, control, or have the necessary authorizations to distribute and commercially exploit the submitted content.

6. UMW review

UMW may review the information provided as part of its metadata review, content review, rights verification, quality control, and anti-fraud procedures.

Is it mandatory to declare any use of AI?

Not all uses require the same level of information. A tool used only for minor technical tasks may have different relevance than a voice entirely generated by AI. UMW may request additional information when the use of AI has relevant implications for rights, identity, metadata, attribution, or distribution policies.

Can I distribute music created with artificial intelligence?

Potentially yes, provided the content meets applicable requirements and the user owns or controls the necessary rights. The use of artificial intelligence alone neither guarantees nor prevents distribution.

Should I credit an artificial intelligence tool as a composer?

AI credits serve as transparency information and do not automatically make an artificial intelligence tool an author, composer, performer, or rights holder. Legal and creative roles must be assigned according to the individuals and entities that actually hold them.
