Is publishing different from distribution?

Yes. Distribution relates mainly to the sound recording and the delivery of releases to DSPs. Publishing relates to the composition, songwriters, splits, registrations, and publishing royalties.

Performing Rights Organization (PRO) - Organizations that collect performance royalties on behalf of songwriters and publishers when music is publicly performed.

Can I use UMW Song Assets if I already have a PRO?

Yes, depending on your current setup. Existing registrations do not automatically prevent publishing administration, but they do require review so the rights flow is handled correctly.

What do I need to start?

You generally need accurate song titles, writer information, ownership splits, PRO status, catalog details, and confirmation that you control or are authorized to manage the relevant rights.

How much do I keep from publishing royalties?

You keep 90% of the publishing royalties collected through UMW Song Assets.

Does UMW take ownership of my songs?

That should only happen if a separate written agreement expressly states it. As presented publicly, the publishing page is positioned as administration and royalty support rather than ownership transfer.

Does UMW cover sync licensing?

UMW coverage for audiovisual licensing/synchronization includes platforms like Netflix, Prime Video, YouTubeTV, HBO Max, Apple TV, and Disney+.

What types of royalties are collected?

Performance royalties from public performances, mechanical royalties from reproductions, sync royalties from audiovisual uses, and YouTube/UGC royalties from user-generated content.

How long does the contract last?

The initial term of the Publishing Services Agreement is one (1) year from the effective date. The Agreement will automatically renew for successive one-year periods unless either party provides written notice of non-renewal at least thirty (30) days before the end of the then-current term.

When are royalties paid?

Publishing income does not always move at the same speed as DSP master royalties. Payment timing varies based on collection society reporting schedules.
